Another small school player is going to get a chance in the NFL. The Kansas City Chiefs signed James Madison running back Marcus Marshall on Monday after he attended the team's rookie mini-camp on a tryout basis.

Marshall started his career with Georgia Tech and ran for over 1,200 yards in two seasons before transferring to James Madison. Last season he rushed 77 times for 446 yards and six touchdowns. Even though he didn't get a ton of attempts in the last few years, he caught the eyes of scouts like Tony Pauline of DraftAnalyst.net who said he was one of the best under-the-radar players in this draft class.

“Cornerback Jimmy Moreland understandably gets the lion’s share of headlines at JMU, but don’t sleep on Marshall,” wrote Pauline. “He tips the scales at just 179 pounds but completed 21 reps on the bench during pro day, and he timed 4.46 seconds in the 40 and hit 35 inches in the vertical jump. Marshall plays to his speed and shows a lot of versatility as a ball carrier and pass catcher out of the backfield. His performance on special teams this summer is key, but Marshall has the makings of a third-down back at the next level.”

Marshall still has a long way to go to make the Chiefs' regular-season roster, and as Pauline notes, his surest means of doing so is certainly as a key special-teamer. It's important that these bubble guys can play special teams at a high level, so if Marshall can do that he might just find a way to sneak on Kansas City final roster.
