After deciding to not re-sign Tyrann Mathieu, the Kansas City Chiefs opted to immediately look elsewhere for his replacement during the free agency period. It did not take long for Chiefs team officials to find his successor, as they came to terms with safety Justin Reid on a three-year, $31.5 million deal in mid-March.

Multiple factors played into Reid's call to say goodbye to the Houston Texans and elect to sign with the Chiefs. Among them, as he revealed on the NFL Network’s “Good Morning Football” program, Patrick Mahomes reached out to the veteran safety to convince him to take his talents to Kansas City.

“It was a combination of a couple of things,” Reid said. “I actually got a call from Pat when I was going through my free agency. He called me and was like, ‘We would just love to have you. Everyone here has a good feeling about you.' The fit felt right.

“There's a winning atmosphere that's there and, of course, the money made sense, too. So when you combine all those things together, it was just a very good fit.”

Reid was accustomed to a winning atmosphere over the opening two seasons of his NFL career, as the Texans clinched a spot in the playoffs in the 2018 and 2019 campaigns. However, they wound up totaling for a mere eight wins in Reid’s final two years in the organization.

For now, Reid is expected to tag along with Juan Thornhill to be the Chiefs’ starting safeties in the upcoming 2022 season.
