After just one season with Gang Green, the New York Jets have announced that they're releasing center Spencer Long effective immediately.

According to the NFL, the rookie center struggled terribly in his first year, and first-season head coach Adam Gase finally pulled the plug on Long's time on the field.

Long still had three years left on a four-year, $27.5 million deal signed in 2018. He was also due to get a $3 million payout just three days after the Super Bowl, which the Jets do not have to pay out now that he's been released from the team.

Long, who came to the team from the Washington Redskins (where he served as a lineman), was hoped to be the next great center in the vein of the great Nick Mangold and Kevin Mawae. However, early in the season, he suffered a series of injuries to his finger and his leg. Additionally, because he struggled with shotgun snaps, he was benched in the 13th week of the season.

He then switched positions with Jonathon Harrison, who served as a center from the 13th week until the season finale, as Long served as a left guard.

There is still an option for Long to come back to Gang Green, especially since the team lacks a truly strong offensive line. Should Gase — who has a $90 million cap — decide to bring Long back, it may be either at a cheaper price, a shorter contract, or both.

This will be the first of many changes that Gase is expected to bring to the team.
