Former Army offensive tackle Brett Toth had been holding out hope that he would be allowed to continue his dream of playing in the NFL. It appears his request to play has been granted.
According to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, Toth will sign a three-year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles after being given a military waiver to play.
Former Army OT Brett Toth was given a military waiver today and now will sign a three-year deal to play for the Philadelphia Eagles, per his agent Alan Herman.
Toth is a second lieutenant who has spent the last year in active military service as a nuclear engineer. He was hoping to take advantage of the new policy that would allow military academy athletes to get a waiver and become professional athletes after graduation. The Eagles wasted no time in potentially shoring up their depth up front by bringing him on board.
He is not the only former military graduate to sign with a team after former Air Force long snapper Austin Cutting was picked up by the Minnesota Vikings. Both player's signings could potentially set a precedent for future players in the service looking to go pro.
Toth made waves as the first player from West Point to take part in the Senior Bowl. It is safe to say that it was there that he was able to make an impression on a number of teams, including the Eagles. His biggest challenge now will be finding a way to make it onto the final 53-man roster after being a year removed from football.
