While it would have been interesting for the San Francisco 49ers to make a waiver claim and acquire Odell Beckham Jr., Kyle Shanahan doesn't want to get fans' hopes up.
On Monday when asked about possibly making a run for OBJ on the waiver wire, Shanahan rejected the idea due to a simple reason: the 49ers just doesn't have the cap space to take his salary hit.
Shanahan said the 49ers don't have the salary cap space to put in a waiver claim for Odell Beckham Jr.

The 49ers have about $4 million in cap space. However, Odell Beckham Jr. is still due $7.25 million for the remainder of the 2021 season, and any team looking to pick him up from waivers will have to shoulder that salary.
San Francisco simply doesn't have that kind of money–well, most teams in the NFL don't at this point of the campaign. As reported earlier, only nine teams have that money to make a run for Beckham, and the list doesn't include the 49ers.
The Jacksonville Jaguars, Philadelphia Eagles, Denver Broncos, Seattle Seahawks, Carolina Panthers, Los Angeles Chargers, Pittsburgh Steelers, Washington Football Team and Cincinnati Bengals are the only ones who have the cap space to claim OBJ.
It has been reported earlier that the 49ers are among Beckham's preferred destinations, along with the Seahawks and New Orleans Saints. With that said, in terms of interest and capacity, Seattle seems to be the perfect destination.
Of course the issue for Beckham now is his desire to win. Among his list, only the Saints are in a good position to make the playoffs, while the 49ers and Seahawks are lagging in the NFC West.
