The San Francisco 49ers' offense was virtually nonexistent versus the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. However, it appears quarterback Nick Mullens will remain the starter in Week 13.
Mullens struggled to find his footing versus Tampa Bay. According to Curtis Pashelka of the Bay Area News Group, head coach Kyle Shanahan is sticking with him for now.
Shanahan says Mullens will be his starting QB this week 49ers
Shanahan's decision may come as a bit of a surprise considering Mullens did not play particularly well. He completed 18-of-32 passes for 221 yards, a touchdown, and two interceptions. Furthermore, the return of San Francisco's original backup in quarterback C.J. Beathard gives them the option of switching things back.
Shanahan had even acknowledged Mullens' poor performance after the loss. However, he also took some blame for his part in the lackluster production from the offense. As a result, it appears Shanahan is not quite ready to give up on him just yet.
Mullens kicked his career off in spectacular fashion versus the Oakland Raiders. He completed 16-of-22 passes for 262 yards with three touchdowns in their dominant win. There was plenty of hype surrounding the former undrafted free agent out of Southern Miss. Unfortunately, he has been unable to follow up his strong performance in the two games since. His poor outing versus Tampa Bay only raises more questions about San Francisco's options under center.
The 49ers are not playing for much at this point in the 2018 NFL season at 2-9. At the very least, they will use this final stretch of games to determine a backup for quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.
