Nick Mullens made his first career NFL start for the San Francisco 49ers in Week 9 against the Oakland Raiders. Not only was it his first start, it was also a game that has officially put him on the map for NFL fans. He played extremely well and was able to lead the 49ers to a 34-3 blowout win over the Raiders.
San Francisco has been dealt quite a few big blows this season, especially with starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo going down with a season-ending torn ACL. C.J. Beathard has also dealt with injury issues, leading to Mullens getting on the field.
In his first game, Mullens completed 16 of his 22 passing attempts for 262 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions. He looked poised and prepared for his first start.
According to a report from Ian Rapoport of NFL.com, Mullens is likely to remain the 49ers' starter against the New York Giants in Week 10.
San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan held off making an announcement this week so he could talk directly to his players, but it would be a major surprise if Nick Mullens did not start at quarterback moving forward, sources say. He replaced an injured C.J. Beathard against the Raiders and had one of the best first starts in NFL history.
Beathard has not played bad, but Mullens showed big potential in his first start.
At 23 years old, Mullens is in his rookie season out of Southern Mississippi. Very few fans had any idea what kind of player he was and what he could bring to the field. Now, the 49ers are excited about his future and want to see what he has to offer.
Expect to see Mullens get a second start this week and don't be surprised if he continues playing good football. He is an ultra-competitive guy and will have a good matchup against a struggling Giants' football team.
