The NHL is considering other international destinations for its preseason games following the 2023 NHL Global Series in Melbourne, Australia this month.

NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly didn't delve into specifics. However, the development marks an exciting time in the league's effort to expand its global reach, per NHL.com senior writer Dan Rosen.

“I'm not going to throw any country names out there but there are other places that we've yet to bring teams or our game which we think present unique opportunities, and we're exploring it. Like any business decision we make, as a league you look to be creative and you look to change it up a bit,” Daly said on Thursday.

The NHL looks forward to the success of the 2023 NHL Global Series in Melbourne

The Los Angeles Kings and Arizona Coyotes will play two preseason games in the 2023 NHL Global Series at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne on September 23 and 24. Australia is a country known for Aussie rules football and rugby. However, Daly said the Australians have been imploring the NHL to organize games in their country for the past 10 to 15 years.

If the NHL Global Series exceeds expectations Down Under, Daly said the league will consider Australia as part of its regular rotation for international games.

On the other hand, the Toronto Maple Leafs, Minnesota Wild, Detroit Red Wings, and Ottawa Senators will play two regular-season games each  in the 2023 NHL Global Series this year. The four teams will play in Stockholm, Sweden from November 16 to 19. It's the first time four NHL teams will play regular-season games overseas.

The international games are just one juicy subplot of the 2023-23 NHL season. The Connor Bedard era with the Chicago Blackhawks and the Vegas Golden Knights' quest for a repeat make the upcoming season an exciting one.

For now, here's hoping the NHL will host its future preseason games in more international destinations.
