Ducharme took over the Canadiens in February of 2021 for Claude Julien and was made the permanent boss this past summer. During his time with the club, he had a 23-46-14 record, but he did lead Montreal to a Cinderella run to the Stanley Cup Finals last season, to the surprise of many. They eventually lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning. It was their deepest playoff run since 1993.

GM Kent Hughes released a statement and thanked Ducharme for his contributions:
“We would like to sincerely thank Dominique for his work and contributions to the Montreal Canadiens organization. At this point in the season, we felt it was in the best interest of the club to make a change,” said Hughes, via NHL.com.
The organization plans to name its next head coach by Wednesday evening.
