The Las Vegas Golden Knights had a disappointing season in 2021-22, missing out on the playoffs for the first time in their short franchise history. After firing Peter DeBoer and replacing him with Bruce Cassidy, the Knights have made another significant move, acquiring veteran defenseman Shea Weber in a trade with the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for Evgenii Dadonov.

The trade is a straight swap between the Canadiens and Golden Knights that will see Evgenii Dadonov head to Montreal. The Knights actually had a deal lined up to move Dadonov to the Anaheim Ducks at the NHL Trade deadline but it fell through after the player vetoed the deal via a clause in his contract.

Weber is a four-time All-Star and has been a finalist for the Norris Trophy on multiple occasions, but was never honored with the award. The 36-year-old spent the first 11 seasons of his career with the Nashville Predators, where he made all four of his All-Star appearances and won the Mark Messier Leadership Award in 2015-16. The Canadiens captain missed the entire 2021-22 season through injury after helping lead the team on a miracle Stanley Cup Final run in 2020-21, losing to the Lightning in five games.

As for Dadonov, he enjoyed a solid season for the Golden Knights in 2021-22, registering 43 points in 78 games, including 20 goals. It was the fourth 20+ goal season of his career, but despite his effective play on the ice, he'll be joining his fourth term in as many years.

Since leaving the Florida Panthers in 2020, Dadonov has had stops with the Ottawa Senators and the Golden Knights, with his next landing spot set to be Montreal.
