The NHL's free agency period is just a day away, with many teams preparing for the opportunity to add talent. Others prepare for the potential to lose out on some of their players. The Edmonton Oilers, the current home of pending free agent left winger Evander Kane, have a surprising stance on the 30-year-old, as reported by ESPN.

The Edmonton Oilers have granted Evander Kane permission to speak with other teams before the NHL's free agency period opens, his agent said Monday.

In a text to multiple media outlets, Kane's agent, Daniel Milstein, wrote he's opening talks with other teams while also continuing discussions with the Oilers. His client is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent on Wednesday.

“While we are still hopeful to have a deal in place with Edmonton, we are starting the interview process with other clubs,” Milstein wrote in the message.

The 14-year veteran was picked up by the Oilers back in January after the San Jose Sharks terminated his contract. The Sharks cited Kane's failure to abide by the league's COVID-19 protocols while in the American Hockey League.

He was also suspended 21 games for attempting to use a fake vaccine card. Now, Evander Kane will have a chance to test out the open market in NHL free agency.
