The USA Gymnastics scandal involving imprisoned former team doctor Larry Nassar has been a black mark on the sport ever since the allegations of hundreds of women came to light. However, it's not just an indictment of the country's gymnastics program, but its justice department as well. Former Olympics gold medalist Simone Biles is one of about 90 women who are taking action against the FBI for their failures in the Nassar scandal, per the Associated Press.

Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles and dozens of other women who say they were sexually assaulted by Larry Nassar are seeking more than $1 billion from the FBI for failing to stop the sports doctor when the agency first received allegations against him, lawyers said Wednesday.

Biles, and other women who were sexually assaulted by Nassar, are reportedly seeking more than $1 billion from the FBI for their failure to stop the abuse.

In July of 2021, the Justice Department's inspector general determined that the FBI made “fundamental” errors in their handling of the Nassar case and that they didn't treat it with the “utmost seriousness.”

USA Gymnastics informed local agents in Indianapolis that three gymnasts were assaulted by Nassar back in 2015, though the organization did not inform the FBI or open a formal investigation.

Biles accused the “entire system” of enabling Nassar. McKayla Maroney, a fellow former Olympics gymnast, said that there was “dead silence” from FBI agents when she talked to them about Nassar's abuse.

Nassar, who allegedly abused over 250 young girls during his time as the USA Gymnastics team doctor and Michigan State doctor, could have been stopped had the FBI taken action.

Maggie Nichols, a national champion gymnast at Oklahoma, said it best.

“It is time for the FBI to be held accountable.”
