Former Olympic gold medal gymnast Mary Lou Retton is back home following a several-week stay in intensive care with a rare form of pneumonia.

One of Retton's daughters, Mckenna Kelly, announced Monday that Retton is back home and “in recovery mode” in a post made to Instagram.

Retton was hospitalized earlier this October at a hospital in Texas. At the time of her hospitalization, she was unable to breath on her own.

Retton did not have health insurance according to a fundraising page created by her family. And as recently as last week another one of her daughters, Shayla Kelley Schrepfer, shared on Instagram that Retton had suffered a setback despite making earlier progress, Good Morning America reported.

As of October 23, the fundraiser had raised more than $450,000, with more than 8,000 donors, to help Retton's recovery.

The former gymnast rose to fame at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, becoming the first U.S. female gymnast to win the Olympic Individual All-Around title. She scored impressive perfect 10s in both the floor exercise and vault routines while notably wearing an American Flag leotard.

Retton also won silver in the vault and bronze medals in the uneven bars and floor exercise events.

Beyond her individual success, Retton played a key role as the leader of the 1984 U.S. female gymnastics team. They achieved their best-ever team result at the time, winning silver while Romania took gold.

In 2018, Retton traded the balance beam for dancing shoes, appearing as a celebrity dancer in the 27th season of Dancing with the Stars.
