The New Orleans Pelicans acquired CJ McCollum during the trade deadline to bolster their roster. While the move unintentionally revealed some turmoil with regards to Zion Williamson, there's no doubt that the move is an improvement on the court. McCollum's scoring and playmaking is a much-needed breath of fresh air for the team.
Case in point: the Pelicans' suprising 15-point upset win against the league-leading Phoenix Suns. Against the best team, CJ McCollum and Brandon Ingram popped off, leading the Pels to a statement win. The reason for the two of them exploding? A dinner appointment between the two a day ago. “We had a good dinner last night. Got some good wine and talked about the rest of the season on what we want to accomplish. I think when you break bread with people, it carries out onto the court.”

PIt's nice to see McCollum, the new guy on the Pelicans, reach out to his new teammates. After spending his entire career with Portland, it wouldn't be surprising if he struggled on his new team. However, his excellent leadership showed in just the first few days. It all paid off in the end, as CJ and BI combined for 60 points to win against the Suns.
There's many more things that need to be addressed with the Pelicans. First and foremost is the Zion situation, of course. The front office brought in McCollum to complement Williamson in his return. However, the Duke product has shown zero signs of progress in his rehab. It remains to be seen whether he'll suit up for the Pels this season… or at all.
