When Overwatch 2 comes out in October, the original Overwatch game will be replaced and no longer be playable.
Reddit AMA reveals future plans to replace Overwatch with Overwatch 2
The developers over at Activision Blizzard are very careful in how they address questions about the upcoming Overwatch 2 title. It turns out that the new game will be replacing its predecessor when it releases on October 4, developers revealed.
One of the fans present during the AMA (Ask Me Anything) session asked about what the term “Early Access” actually means for Overwatch 2. The fan's question is:
“What does the term “Early Access” means for Overwatch 2? Does this means that on this day OW1 is getting replaced by OW2's PvP or will OW1 shutdown once the game is out of Early Access?”
Blizzard then responded very candidly, saying:
“We’re using the term Early Access to indicate that this is just the start of many new things coming to the game. We’re launching with new heroes, maps and features, but there are even more of these coming seasonally – every 9 weeks. We recently released a roadmap detailing some of this content, with a new hero coming in Seasons 1 and 2, and a new map in Season 2. Additionally, larger pieces of the game that have always been a part of the vision for OW2 will be released to the game as part of the live service, including the launch of the PvE Campaign next year.”
The response ended with:
“When OW2 launches on Oct 4th it will be a replacement for the current Live Service.”
It turns out that Overwatch 2 will be replacing the Overwatch live service, which means that there will be no new battle passes for the older game once OW2 comes out. On the other hand, it seems that the original game can still be played, since former Game Director Jeff Kaplan earlier said that the two games will have a shared multiplayer environment, which entails that the game will co-exist one way or another. Finally. But it looks like the focus will be shifted from OW's 6v6 game environment into the new 5v5 game environment of OW2.
We'll surely find out more about the game as we come closer to the Overwatch 2 release date this October 2022.
