The San Diego Padres have been busy talking trade leading up to Opening Day. The Padres nearly worked out a trade with the New York Mets involving Eric Hosmer, Chris Paddack and Dominic Smith, but talks stalled. However, San Diego just completed a trade with the Oakland Athletics for pitcher Sean Manaea, according to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com.

Here are the full details of the trade:

The two prospects going to Oakland weren't top guys in the San Diego farm system:

Manaea is just the latest notable Athletics player to be traded away this offseason after the lockout ended. Oakland shipped Matt Olson to the Atlanta Braves and Matt Chapman to the Toronto Blue Jays in blockbuster deals in mid-March.

The lefty is coming off a stellar season for the Athletics, starting a career-high 32 games and racking up 179 1/3 innings pitched. He posted an 11-10 record with a 3.91 ERA and 194 strikeouts, by far the most in his career.

By trading for Manaea, the Padres add to an already stacked rotation led by Yu Darvish and Blake Snell. Given San Diego's talks with the Mets, the franchise might not be done yet when it comes to trades. With a deep rotation, the Padres could look to trade a pitcher like Paddack for help elsewhere. A Hosmer deal could still be in the cards as well.

San Diego is hoping to bounce back after a disappointing 2021 campaign, which saw them miss the playoffs and then fire manager Jayce Tingler.
