If you’re looking for proof that the sports card boom is indeed real, you don’t have to look too far. Goldin Auctions just provided the answer by auctioning various sports memorabilia items last month that amounted to $33 million, headlined by NFL star Patrick Mahomes, and NBA legend Michael Jordan.

Patrick Mahomes Football Rookie Card Auction Most Expensive NFL Football Card Ever Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl LV Tampa Bay Buccaneers Tom Brady Trading Cards American Football Goldin Auctions Record Breaking Record Setting World record

Among the cards auctioned off was a 2017 Panini National Treasures Patrick Mahomes Rookie Patch Auto 1/5 BGS 9 and a pair of 1986 Fleer Michael Jordan rookie cards PSA 10. The former fetched $861,000, making it the most expensive football card in the world. The latter, meanwhile, sold for $738,000 each, making it the highest-paid Jordan rookie card ever.

While those cards were massive in their own right, the most expensive card that was auctioned off that night was a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle PSA 8, which sold for $1.6 million. Of course, this price is a far cry from a PSA 9 copy of the same card, which sold for a record-breaking $5.2 million last January. But nobody's going to be sad over selling a card for seven-figures.

To put things into perspective, a PSA 10 Fleer Jordan Rookie card sold two months ago for $150,000. Last month’s auction by Goldin boosted that card’s value through the roof. The same can’t be said for Mahomes’ value in the market, which suffered a dip after the Kansas City Chiefs lost the Super Bowl. It’s expected his stock will rebound once the hype for next season starts to ramp up again.

In a statement, Ken Goldin, founder of Goldin Auctions, said he has never seen so much interest in the hobby as he does now. He added that this hobby is not only fun, but becoming a valuable investment for many.

Coincidentally, a huge investment firm, which counts Kevin Durant and Mark Cuban as investors, purchased a $40 million majority stake in Goldin’s company. This move will allow Goldin Auctions to reach new markets in Asia, as stated by Goldin himself.

If the market continues to grow at this rate and new people are introduced to this hobby, the idea of these prices being shattered isn’t far off. For sure, the cards shown above will break the $1 million mark soon.
