New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton didn't have the type of season that he envisioned prior to the start of his campaign. Despite the underwhelming performance by the 2015 NFL MVP, his former Carolina Panthers teammate in Los Angeles Chargers guard Trai Turner still believes that Newton can turn things around next season.

“First year on a new team and it's just different man,” Turner said via TMZ Sports. “Different people around you. Different city, new place and all that. But, I don't think that was the last showing that Cam would have wanted.”

“Me just knowing him and knowing what he can do and just being able to see him play, I know that he has more left in in the tank to give.”

Both Newton and Turner spent time together as teammates in Carolina from 2014 to 2019. Turner was also part of the squad which earned an appearance in Super Bowl 50 during the 2015 season which was Newton's best statistical campaign to date. After several years of playing alongside the veteran quarterback, Turner definitely knows what Newton is capable of doing on the field, regardless of a rough year with the Patriots.

Prior to the season, Newton already ran out of luck as he inherited a depleted New England lineup that missed out on the services of several veteran players who opted out due to the COVID-19 pandemic. His lack of weapons along with the team's late-game collapses led the Patriots to conclude the season with a dismal 7-9 record for the third spot in the AFC East.

The three-time Pro Bowl playmaker finished his 2020 campaign with a total of 2,657 passing yards on 242 completions along with eight touchdowns in 15 appearances. He is set to become an unrestricted free agent after inking a one-year, $1.75 million deal with the Patriots prior to the 2020 season.

As of the moment, New England's decision to bring him back for another tour of duty is still hanging in the balance. Despite the uncertainty, Cam Newton remains to be an intriguing asset and is expected to garner interest from a team that is looking to acquire a serviceable quarterback under center for next season.
