The New England Patriots added a few pieces to the puzzle on the offensive side of the ball this offseason, including veteran tight end Dwayne Allen, who was acquired via a trade.

It is anticipated that Allen will play a major role in the offense as the secondary option at his position behind All-Pro Rob Gronkowski. However, Allen recently voiced that he was having some difficulty in learning the ins and out of the Patriots' offensive scheme.

From Rich Thompson of the Boston Herald:

“It is extremely hard,” Allen said. “I’m not going to sugarcoat it.”

This is a complete shake up for the 27-year-old, who is going from playing in the Colts' offense to something entirely new with the Patriots, who have been running nearly the same offense for years with two-time league MVP Tom Brady under center. At the same time, Allen did express his excitement for the next chapter of his career.

“It is hard but also stimulating and very exciting,” Allen said. “It is one of those things that where you pray for something so long, and when it comes, you can’t cry because it’s harder than you thought it was going to be.

In his first five seasons, Allen has developed into a reliable receiving tight end in the league. He is coming off his most productive campaign, recording 35 catches on 52 targets for 406 receiving yards and six touchdowns in 14 games played. Keep in mind, he put up those numbers without the services of Pro Bowl quarterback Andrew Luck.

There is an opportunity in New England for Allen to put together a highly productive season if he can get a strong understanding of the team's offensive scheme.
