New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman will miss the first four weeks of the 2018 season after testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance. Edelman has since posted his apology for the whole situation on Instagram where he said he didn’t know what happened. But as it turns out, he might not be the only one.

According to Albert Breer of The MMQB, Edelman’s positive test was triggered by a substance that wasn’t immediately recognizable and that scientists are still analyzing the sample.

Breer also notes that Edelman’s test happened during the offseason, which means the substance in question wasn’t a stimulant like Adderall. Stimulants are deemed as performance-enhancing during the regular season, but they fall under the substances of abuse policy during the offseason.

The 32-year-old Edelman had been working his way back from a torn ACL he suffered during preseason last year. In his last full season for the Patriots in 2016, he had a terrific year with 98 catches for 1,106 receiving yards-a new career-high-as he helped them toward another Super Bowl win.

It remains to be seen exactly what this mysterious substance means for Edelman’s suspension situation and whether it may result in a possible appeal that can reduce or even rescind his ban.

But as of right now, Tom Brady and the Patriots will still have to work under the assumption that they will be without their top wideout for the first quarter of the season. Although, they showed last season that they have the ability to cope with his loss.
