The New England Patriots are desperate to get the ball rolling on Sunday in an AFC East clash with the Buffalo Bills.

But the injuries are beginning to stack up. Veteran wide receiver Julian Edelman will not play after dealing with a knee injury for the majority of the year, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Edelman has been immensely inconsistent in terms of production.

The 34-year-old got off to a tremendous start, with 13 receptions and over 236 yards through the first two games. But Edelman has tailed off along with the rest of the Patriots offense.

Edelman had still seen a decent target share in the next three games, but he has been a total non-factor in the last two games. He had two receptions for just eight yards in the team's Week 6 loss against the Denver Broncos. Edelman then had just one catch for 13 yards in Week 7 against the San Francisco 49ers.

New England's offense has totally mirrored Edelman's decline in production.

The Patriots have scored a combined 18 points and gained less than 300 total yards in each of the last two contests. Cam Newton has struggled amid some injuries on the offensive line and with an ailing receiving corps.

It remains to be seen just how long Edelman might be out. Adam Schefter of ESPN reported he underwent a knee procedure and could miss “some time.”

In any case, this could make New England's desire to acquire a wide receiver that much stronger prior to Tuesday's trade deadline. Perhaps the Patriots can attempt to pry one of Brandin Cooks or Will Fuller from the Houston Texans.

Regardless, the Patriots face an uphill climb as they hope to dig out of a 2-4 hole.
