New England Patriots tight end Matt LaCosse has a golden opportunity in front of him. So far this offseason, seemingly everything has been going LaCosse's way. The Patriots have a very thin depth chart at the position, and LaCosse should have an excellent chance to be a contributor for the defending Super Bowl champions.

First, Rob Gronkowski retired. Then the Patriots signed Benjamin Watson, but it was recently announced that he'd be suspended for the first four games of this season. Then earlier this week, they cut Austin Seferian-Jenkins, who was presumed to be competing for a starting role.

LaCosse's competitors are dropping like flies and might leave him as the last man standing. Despite that, LaCosse made it clear when speaking to reporters after a recent practice that he isn't letting it get to his head.

“Obviously it's a good opportunity, but again nothing's been earned yet. We still have a really long way to go, everyone's competing for the same spot. I haven't earned anything yet, so it's kind of just one of those things where you keep pedal on the medal and you kind of get what you earn.”

It's good to hear LaCosse is staying humble, and he also highlighted his versatility and willingness to be a team player.

“Multiple guy, can play inside outside. I've played in the backfield before, special teams. All over the field, wherever you need me, that's where I'm going to go.”

Finally, LaCosse acknowledged the fact that his new quarterback is none other than Tom Brady.

“I'd be lying to you if I said it wasn't pretty cool. Obviously one of the greatest, if not the greatest, to ever play this game.”

LaCosse signed with New England after spending the last couple of years in Denver. He had a role on offense for the first time in his career last season, catching 24 passes for 250 yards and a touchdown.
