This New England Patriots story is now unfolding in San Francisco, but Jimmy Garoppolo isn't forgotten in Foxborough, albeit for a less-than-gleaming reason.

Before Jimmy Garoppolo had a rebound game against the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday night, he had an awful preseason debut against the Denver Broncos in which he posted a 0.0 passer rating. His horrendous game against the Broncos was a follow-up to throwing five straight interceptions in practice.

While most can claim his issues are caused by a need to shake off the rust following a torn ACL, others have different reasons as to why. New England Patriots color man Scott Zolak dropped his viewings from Garappolo's time as a Patriot, calling him “one of the worst practice quarterbacks we've had,” per NFL Media's Marc Sessler.

Apparently, this isn't a new thing. Pro Football Focus' Kevin Cole notes that Sessler's colleague Gregg Rosenthal said he heard the same, saying so in a recent “Around the NFL” podcast.

As most can recall, Garoppolo started his career in New England, playing there for three seasons before his trade to the 49ers in 2017. He was once the heir apparent to Tom Brady. Head coach Bill Belichick wasn't happy with trading him; which conflicts with reports considering that doing well in practice is a focal point for the Patriots.

So is Garappolo really one of the worst practice quarterbacks out there? Is it because of a lack of effort? Or understanding? Or something completely different? Or, is it that Zolak is potentially blowing smoke? One may never know the answer to that question. Nonetheless,  Jimmy G needs a big year in 2019; if not, the 49ers can cut him with very little dead money on the books.
