The New England Patriots have released quarterback turned wide receiver Danny Etling, according to Field Yates of ESPN.

Etling was drafted by the Patriots in the seventh round of last years draft by the Patriots to play quarterback, but after the team drafted Jarrett Stidham this spring, he moved to wide receiver in hopes he would have a better chance to make the team.

Etling had said a couple of weeks ago he thought he was well equipped to play wide receiver, but it's clear the Patriots didn't feel the same way.

“Everyone has a lot of different roles on this team, and I'm no exception,” Etling told reporters via USA Today. “I'm excited to continue to keep trying to find a different role for myself and do whatever the coaches ask me to do. … I've coached it a lot being a quarterback, and I understand offensive football, and it's helped me get a different perspective of the game itself.”

When the team made the switch, there were some who wondered if Etling could be the next Julian Edelman. Edelman was a quarterback at Kent State before switching to wide receiver and that has worked out with great success.

It's clear with Etling that after just a few weeks of the Patriots coaching staff watching him, it was clear that the switch wasn't working.

It's unclear if other teams have interest in him, but there is a chance another team could want to bring him in and switch him back to quarterback.
