The New England Patriots have a crowded running back room and that means Rex Burkhead could be one of the surprising cuts of camp. Burkhead is only 28 years old, and accumulated 58 yards in the Super Bowl, but his success this upcoming season might come on a different team.

Brad Gagnon of Bleacher Report wrote about players that could be the most surprising cuts and included Burkhead because of the numbers game. Sony Michel is the clear cut number one back heading into the season, and the team just drafted Damian Harris so he seems all but safe.

James White is a pass-catching specialist out of the backfield, so it's very unlikely the team is going to want to move on from him.

Brandon Bolden is the other running back currently on the roster and he is a standout special teams player, something that Burkhead isn't.

Unless an injury occurs or the Patriots decide to carry five backs on the active roster, they could opt to keep special teams ace Brandon Bolden as the No. 4 back over the less versatile Burkhead.

Burkhead carried the ball 57 times for 168 yards, but failed to score a touchdown. He also hauled in 14 catches for 131 yards and a touchdown. The fourth spot will probably come down to Bolden or Burkhead with training camp being extra important for each guy this year.

If the Patriots decide to move on from Burkhead they could try to trade him, but if no deal can be reached a release seems likely.
