Rob Gronkowski has been one of the biggest names in the NFL over the past couple of seasons and has been one of the faces of the New England Patriots' dynasty. There have also been rumors that he could retire at some point in the near future, although those rumors have not been confirmed to this point in time.

According to a report from Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk via NBC Sports, Gronkowski could re-consider retirement this coming offseason if the Patriots don't offer him a new contract.

“I think if the Patriots had won the Super Bowl he would have retired. And I think after this season, which has been very disappointing for him and it is his second straight year with a significant incentive package that we’re probably close to saying he’s not going to hit any of the four markers which each make him $1.1 million and he can make a maximum of $3.3 million that way.”

There was a report that came out that the Patriots tried to trade Gronkowski to the Detroit Lions during the offseason. He threatened to retire, which stopped the trade from happening.

Throughout the seven games he has played with New England so far this season, Gronkowski has caught 29 passes for 448 yards and a touchdown. His numbers simply have not been what fans have come to expect from him. Injuries have played a role, but he does not look as motivated when he is on the field.

At 29 years old, Gronkowski is closing in on the end of his prime. He could still easily play for another five years, but it will all depend on how comfortable he is with his situation.

Expect to hear more rumors about Gronkowski considering retiring as the offseason draws closer. Whenever he does decide to retire, the Patriots are going to have a tough time replacing his role with another player.
