The New Orleans Pelicans arguably were more accurate on offense in the first quarter of their game Wednesday against the Los Angeles Lakers than Cupid on this Valentine's Day.

With Anthony Davis playing like a basketball demigod and E’Twaun Moore and Jrue Holiday finding their shooting touch from the floor early, the Pelicans were able to torch the Lakers’ helpless defense right from the get-go. During the contest’s opening quarter, the Pelicans dropped a franchise-record 46 points – the most for the team in a quarter.

The Pelicans’ prolific showing on offense in the first quarter broke the team’s previous record of 44 points in a period. The Pelicans have scored 44 points in a quarter twice before, the latest of which occurred in December of last year, when they pumped out 44 points in the fourth quarter of a 131-124 win at home against the Philadelphia 76ers, per Basketball Reference.

Davis hit all his shots from the field in the first period. This type of stretches from the versatile big man is becoming a norm, especially with his increased usage of late due to the absence of DeMarcus Cousins. Moore, on the other hand, caught fire early, going 4-for-5 from the field with a three-pointer in the same quarter, while Holiday hit five of his six shots, including a three-pointer. Overall, the Pelicans punished the Lakers with a fantastic 67.9 field goal shooting percentage during that quarter, burying 19 of their 28 shot attempts.

The Pelicans are fourth in the league in scoring with 110.8 points per game, and even without Cousins, the team seems to be stable offensively – at least one paper as New Orleans has generated the same 110.8 points average over its past five contests.
