Now that the New Orleans Pelicans' run in the 2022 NBA Playoffs is over, all eyes are turning to Zion Williamson.

The Pelicans surprised everyone by making the postseason and defeating the Phoenix Suns twice in the first-round matchup. Earlier in the season, the only headlines about the team were about Williamson's rehab and reported disapproval of the team. Opposing teams were considering him one of the next stars who could be available for trade.

The Pelicans' path took a drastic shift after they acquired CJ McCollum. The team improved and squeaked into the play-in tournament. Things are looking up for them not only because of their new core but because Williamson has vowed to sign a contract extension:

Although it won't be officially time to celebrate for Pelicans fans until Williamson puts pen to paper, this is a huge vote of confidence. Williamson added that this group is special and that first-year head coach Willie Green got players to buy into his system quickly. He is looking forward to getting back out on the court with them:

Williamson will add a much-needed scorer on offense alongside Brandon Ingram and McCollum. Although he still has to recover fully from his foot injury, he has made progress and is a top-25 talent when healthy. A Williamson extension will likely be in the ballpark of a max contract.

The Pelicans can officially extend the extension offer to Williamson in the summer. His health will always be something to monitor, but his talent is undeniable. Adding one of the NBA's best interior scorers to a team with so much energy should be a recipe for success.

The Zion Williamson extension will mark a new beginning for the Pelicans. It will signal that they are a team on the rise. While he could always ask for a trade down the line, these comments are a good sign about his commitment to the franchise.
