It has been one entire season since veteran forward Josh Smith last played in the NBA with the Houston Rockets.

However, it appears he could be near another stint in the league as Jack Maloney of CBS Sports is reporting that Smith has been working out with the New Orleans Pelicans.

With not too many free-agent options available to replace Hill's production, the Pelicans are apparently working out Josh Smith, who had his best years with the Atlanta Hawks — he averaged 15.3 points, eight rebounds and just over two blocks a game in nine seasons in Atlanta — but has also played with the Detroit Pistons, Los Angeles Clippers and Houston Rockets.

This may be coming in direct correlation to the Pelicans losing starter Solomon Hill to a hamstring injury that required surgery and will keep him out of the mix for the next six to eight months. Smith is a proven veteran that could step into that role if needed or can be a reliable option off the bench.

The chatter about the 31-year-old returning to the NBA began to spark up earlier this month as he reportedly was seen working out with a few of the Rockets players namely James Harden and Chris Paul. That said, nothing had come about from that situation up to this point in time.

Things could quickly transition to Smith working out a contract with the Pelicans on a relatively inexpensive short-term deal ahead of training camp that begins later next month.
