The NHL playoffs are always one of the best spectacles in all of sports. Hockey fans were reminded of that Tuesday night, as the Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Rangers played almost two full games before a winner was decided. Just under six minutes into the third overtime, Penguins superstar Evgeni Malkin scored the game-winning goal, sending Rangers fans home sorely disappointed.

The Penguins did an excellent job playing along the boards and stealing the puck. Penguins' John Marino then fired the puck into traffic and Malkin showed off his excellent hand-eye coordination to deflect the puck past Igor Shesterkin.

Following the game, Malkin addressed the team's performance. “We know we can win every game if we play right. We play smart. We play hard. I think we deserved to win tonight.”

There is little doubt that the Penguins possess enough talent to make a deep run in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Sidney Crosby and Malkin are still on the team. Beyond that, they also have veterans Jeff Carter and Jake Guentzel, both of whom are dangerous.

This game might actually prove to have been a must-win scenario for Pittsburgh though. In the second overtime, Penguins goalie Casey DeSmith left the game with an undisclosed injury. Even though back up goalie Louie Domingue played very well, stopping all 17 shots, this series could become significantly more difficult if DeSmith cannot return.

Penguins starting goalie Tristan Jarry has already been ruled out for the first couple games of this series. He is considered day-to-day with a foot injury.
