The Pittsburgh Penguins earned a thrilling Game 1 victory over the New York Rangers Tuesday night. It took almost six full periods of action, as the game went into triple overtime until Evgeni Malkin sent Rangers fans home unhappy. However, not all of the news is good for Pittsburgh. During the second overtime, starting goaltender Casey DeSmith removed himself from the game with an injury.

Thankfully for Pittsburgh, third string goalie Louis Domingue came in and made all 17 stops, helping the Penguins to a 4-3 win. However, news surfaced that DeSmith is likely not going to be ready for Game 2 and is listed day-t0-day.

ESPN hockey reporter Emily Kaplan confirmed that DeSmith did not leave the game because of cramps and sustained a legitimate injury, as the Penguins goalie underwent a medical evaluation Wednesday.

That means that Pittsburgh is looking at starting Louis Domingue in Game 2 in New York. Domingue has been in the NHL since 2014-2015, primarily as a back up. He started 36 games way back in 201-5-2016, but has only appeared in four games over the last three years.

Pittsburgh is already without their top goalie, Tristan Jarry. Jarry suffered a lower-body injury on April 16th against the Boston Bruins and was listed as week-to-week. However, he was upgraded to day-to-day a few days ago. The hope is that Jarry can return at some point in this series, but that is far from certain.

Pittsburgh would be in a much more difficult position had they lost Game 1. But after stealing home ice, they are not in a desperate situation starting Domingue.
