The Philadelphia Phillies announced Thursday morning that they were parting ways with Joe Girardi. The 2022 MLB season was only Girardi's third year with the Phillies after replacing Gabe Kapler in October 2019.

Shortly after the news broke, Girardi joined MLB Network Radio to discuss what went wrong for the Phillies to start the season. The Athletic's Britt Ghiroli tweeted Girardi's explanation for what happened:

The former Phillies manager explained that there were just too many obstacles to overcome:

“There's a number of reasons we didn't win. We gave too many extra outs that probably cost us four or five games, maybe even more. At times our bullpen struggled. We had some guys that have much better stuff than the potential that they pitched to, which lead to some games. Some guys got off to slow starts offensively and that happens. I think you can overcome sometimes one thing, maybe even two but sometimes when it's more than that it's somewhat difficult.”

Girardi said that he understands why the team's lack of success fell on his shoulders and has nothing but positive hopes for the Phillies moving forward:

“I can look back on this last week where we were 3-7,” he said, via NBC Sports Philadelphia. “I think realistically we should have been 7-3. Well, that's going to fall on me because we weren't, and I understand that…I just pray that they get better and that they get to the playoffs.”

The Phils will attempt to turn their 22-29 season around under interim manager Rob Thomson, starting with their upcoming three-game home series against the Los Angeles Angels.
