After tons of criticism and a disappointing start to the season, the Philadelphia Phillies are officially parting ways with Joe Girardi. The Athletic's Jayson Stark tweeted the news Friday morning.

For now, bench coach Rob Thomson will act as the team's interim manager, making him the 56th manager in franchise history. Thomson has spent the last five years in Philadelphia as the bench coach and coordinating spring training. In light of Thomson's promotion, the Phillies promoted quality assurance coach Mike Calitri to the bench coach position.

The news comes just hours before the Phillies' three-game home series against the Los Angeles Angels. Ahead of the series, the Phillies are seven games below .500 at 22-29. They're 12 games behind the New York Mets for first in the National League and 2.5 games back on the second place Atlanta Braves.

The team tweeted an official announcement from the Phillies President of Baseball Operations David Dombrowski shortly after the news got out.

“It has been a frustrating season for us up until this point, as we feel that our club has not played up to its capabilities.

Along with Girardi, assistant coach Bobby Meacham was also let go. While all of us share the responsibility for the shortcomings, I felt that a change was needed and that a new voice in the clubhouse would give us the best chance to turn things around,” Dombrowski explained.

The 2022 MLB season only marked Girardi's third season with the Phillies. He was hired in October of 2019 to replace Gabe Kapler, now manager of the San Francisco Giants.
