The Philadelphia Phillies hit a new low for the 2022 season. They blew a six-run, ninth-inning lead at home to the New York Mets to lose in the most embarrassing way. Philly is now 11-15 on the season and dangerously close to last place in the NL East.

Several members of the Phillies were distraught at the heartbreakingĀ loss, per Todd Zolecki of MLB.com. Manager Joe Girardi said it is likely the most brutal defeat since he started in Philadelphia in 2020. Bryce Harper compared it to a punch to the gut. Nick Castellanos had some hard words for the entire sport of baseball.

ā€œIt sucks, man,ā€ said Nick Castellanos, who left the game in the sixth inning after being hit by a pitch. ā€œThereā€™s no way around it. It sucks. Baseball sometimes sucks. Tonight sucked.ā€

Girardi and Kyle Schwarber discussed the team's struggles earlier in the season but so far, not much has been done to fix them. Although Schwarber and the lineup do their job by hitting well, the Phillies struggle on the mound. Their bullpen is atrocious and their starting pitching is good but not great. Although the season is young, these issues are ugly.

The Phillies shelled out big money this offseason for Schwarber and Castellanos but still don't have the makings of an elite team just yet. Adding two powerful hitters is wise, even with their defensive shortcomings, but having one reliable bullpen arm is not. Since they are locked into this aging core, they could be in serious trouble.
