Cade Cunningham is truly starting to show why the Detroit Pistons made him the top overall draft pick. He has gotten better each step of the way in his first NBA campaign and has put himself all over the franchise's rookie record books.

In a loss to the LA Clippers, Cunningham tied a Pistons rookie record that hasn't been matched in nearly four decades. He scored 20 points in seven straight games, which only Kelly Tripucka has done. He recently put himself in Isiah Thomas's territory, showing that he is one of the best youngsters in the history of the franchise.

Cunningham could have broken the record by a few games already by scoring just one more point against the Charlotte Hornets. Since he scored 25 the prior game, he would have had nine straight games with 20 points. He scored 20 points and 17 points respectively in the game prior to his 25-point outburst. Even though he missed out on securing the record, it's obvious that he is the real deal.

Since the All-Star break, Cunningham has been phenomenal and the Pistons are playing very well. Cunningham should run away with the rookie scoring title and end up with a very good case for the Rookie of the Year Award. The 20-year-old should also end up second in rookie assists per game and top-five in rookie rebounds per game.

The Pistons, even as they find their stride, are 18-50 and just half a game ahead of the worst record in the league. This season was made for the team to sort out its growing pains and land a top draft pick. They have done just that and enjoyed a very good rookie campaign from their prized rook.
