New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick has laser focus ahead of his third straight Super Bowl appearance and this time around he's facing off against the Los Angeles Rams. Belichick has an eye for defense and Rams defensive coordinator Wade Phillips is one the best defensive minded coaches the league has seen.

According to Phil Perry of NBC Sports, Belichick praised Phillips' ability to keep the same defensive system for years while it still being incredibly effective. Belichick touched on the Rams defense and how significant Phillips' game plan has been to their success.

“They do what they do in their system, they do it well. They have a lot of confidence in it, which they should. [Phillips has] been successful everywhere he’s been. He’s been doing it for 30 years in multiple organizations with multiple groups of players against every kind of offense he could see. I remember dealing with him when I was in Cleveland. And to his credit, there’s not many of us that have a system that can last that long.”

The Patriots are run in a very strong systematical way, so the fact that Belichick finds Phillips ability to have the same system for as long as he has speaks volumes. Belichick recognizes Phillips has made obvious adjustments and changes in game planning, but his system of running a defense has remained very much the same for years.

“Certainly, there’s an element of game planning and how he plays one team or another team varies, but it’s within the system that he has. I don’t think he’s out there drawing up a lot of new defenses. I think he has a menu and he selects the ones that fit best against his opponent and the situations as the situations come up in that game.”
