Washington Redskins quarterback Alex Smith suffered a gruesome broken leg injury in Sunday's contest against the Houston Texans. Smith underwent surgery to repair his compound fracture caused by what it is called rotational force. Washington head coach Jay Gruden reported Monday that Smith's surgery went well and a full recovery is expected.

Smith's injury will take 6- 8 months in terms of recovery. Unfortunately for Smith and the Redskins, they were playing great football.  Now that their man under center is out for the season the Redskins will be facing an uphill battle with a backup quarterback.

Colt McCoy served as Smith's back up this season and presumably will become the starter going forward until the team can figure out who gives them their best chance of winning games.

Former NFL quarterback Mark Sanchez was signed on Monday to help support the team in terms of finding a fit at the position.  The void will be tough to fill for the Redskins considering Smith was playing at a competitive level this season. Smith had a 6-4 record with Washington this season as well as a 62.5 completion percentage, 2,180 yards, 1o touchdowns, and five interceptions.

Smith has never particularly jumped off the stat sheets anywhere in his career despite playing incredible football for the Kansas City Chiefs last season. Smith has always been an excellent game manager and hardly makes mistakes. Hopefully, once he gets back to full health he can carry out the same level of play.
