Pat Riley is a legend in the NBA.

He's won championships as a player, a head coach and an executive throughout his 40-plus years in the league. He's widely respected by many people around the league due to his lengthy resume when it relates to basketball.

Riley has obviously made a living building the Miami Heat from an expansion franchise to arguably the most-consistent team in the Eastern Conference since he joined the organization in 1995. Before he became president of the franchise, he had served as a head coach for the team from 1995 through 2003 and one more time from 2005 until 2008.

As some may remember, the Heat were known as a rugged and tough team in the late 90's when they first reached contender status in the NBA. They were a part of the league's best rivalry at the time versus the New York Knicks. So it comes as no shock that Riley would send a message to his players by fining them $1,500—for helping opponents up off of the court.

In an article by ESPN's Pablo Torres, the former Heat head coach had this rule in place during his tenure as Miami's head coach:

“Years later, as coach of the Heat, Riley kept the spirit of the '80s alive by reportedly instituting a $1,500 fine for any player who helped an opponent up off the floor. ‘For a lot of people, it's hard to comprehend how you could be friendly and outgoing and still be a fierce competitor,' says Cavaliers forward James Jones, who played with Wade and James in Miami. ‘They think it has to be one way.'”

Despite the fact that he's 71 years old, it's no wonder Riley has been able to have success in the NBA spanning across five different decades. He's able to adapt to the current game while still retaining a bit of an old-school mentality.
