The NBA's new eight-year endorsement partnership with Nike is off to a fantastic start.

The Sacramento Kings will be the first team in the league to launch the latest technological innovation from one of the largest athletic apparel companies in the world: an augmented reality app that allows fans to create personalized Kings jerseys and virtually photograph themselves with the team's players.

Garrett Temple is the first Sacramento player to be featured on the app, with fans able to digitally take pictures of themselves with the veteran guard. The AR app also allows fans to customize their own Kings jerseys and virtually display their creations from their own space.

The Kings' chief technology officer Ryan Montoya issued a statement, via Dean Takahashi of VentureBeat.com, on the milestone.

“Through technology, we’re able to put the latest in uniform design right in the hands of basketball fans around the world with an unprecedented amount of information and detail. The partnership between Nike and the NBA is rooted in creativity and transformative design, and with our augmented reality experience, we’re building on that long-standing tradition.”

This isn't the first time that the Kings were a step ahead of the rest of the league when it comes to the latest technological feats. They claimed to be one of the first teams to use Twitter as a medium for online communication, and they were the first team, along with the San Antonio Spurs, to broadcast a live NBA game in virtual reality last October. The team's current home, the Golden 1 Center, is also the only solar-powered arena in the NBA.
