Exum’s injury was a non-contact injury, which led some fans and the media alike to believe that it could be something extremely serious.</p><p>The veteran point guard would hobble off of the court on Monday with medical staff and would be ruled out immediately. While Exum avoided a season-ending injury, he’s expected to miss at least one month of action due to his calf ailment.</p><p>Before his injury, Exum was making his third consecutive start for the Cavs early in the season. In <a href="https://cavsnation.com/what-dante-exum-brings-to-the-cavs/">his six games for Cleveland</a> this season, the former No. 5 overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft was averaging 3.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.2 assists while playing 19.3 minutes per game.</p><p>With Exum on the mend with a calf injury, more will be asked of Collin Sexton and Darius Garland in the backcourt. Though, Garland is dealing with an injury himself that kept him off of the court against the Magic on Monday.</p><p>At the same time, Damyean Dotson could see an extended run moving forward after scoring 16 points in Garland’s place on Monday. The seasoned swingman was traded from Utah to Cleveland midway through last season after four full seasons with the Jazz to begin his professional playing career in the United States. Over the course of an even 23 minutes per game this time around, he was averaging 4.6 points, 3.4 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 0.8 steals, 0.4 blocks and 1.2 turnovers.</p><p>For his NBA playing career as a whole, Dante Exum has already appeared in 244 regular season games with 71 starts split between the Jazz and Cavaliers in addition to averaging just 5.7 points and 18.6 minutes per outing.</p><p>Dante Exum will hopefully not be sidelined too long by this injury, given the stop-and-start nature of an NBA career which clearly has potential but has not been able to get off the ground due to a series of injuries which have halted his growth and development as a pro.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Exum has appeared in 24 games with Cleveland and is<a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/e/exumda01.html" rel="noopener noreferrer"> averaging</a> 5.6 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.4 assists while shooting 47.9 percent from the field, 35.1 percent from beyond the arc and 73.2 percent from the free-throw line.</p><p>Exum never lived up to the hype of being the fifth overall pick in the 2014 draft with the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sports/nba/utah-jazz/" rel="noopener noreferrer">Utah Jazz</a>. He has career averages of just <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/e/exumda01.html" rel="noopener noreferrer">5.7 points</a>, 1.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game. Exum missed the entire 2015-16 season due to a knee injury.</p><p>Exum is making $9,100,000 this season and will earn $9,100,000 in 2020-21, the final year of his contract. It would be a nice story if he can jumpstart his career in Cleveland. Unfortunately, though, Cleveland seemed to run out of steam in the closing minutes of play.</p><p>The Cavs trailed by as many as 25 points in Sunday’s matchup. Things were looking bleak until head coach John Beilein inserted a unique lineup in the second half — one consisting of reserve players like Exum, Brandon Knight and Ante Zizic.</p><p>Exum caught fire, racking up 24 of his career-high 28 points in the second half alone. His three-pointer with just over eight minutes remaining in the final frame gave the Cavs a 97-96 lead, resulting in a roar from the crowd inside Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse.</p><p>Though the Cavs were rolling, coach Beilein decided to give Exum a breather, opting for Collin Sexton and Cedi Osman. As a result, the Timberwolves regained the advantage and later pulled away for a 118-103 victory.</p><p>The Cavs were down a few players, including Tristan Thompson (illness) and Kevin Love (rest). This led to more playing time for players like Exum, who finished with 28 points, three rebounds, two assists and one steal. Zizic stepped up to the plate as well, scoring 15 points and 12 rebounds.</p><blockquote>“I think, just going out there, I took my shots,” <a href="https://twitter.com/FOXSportsCLE/status/1214173520667795456?s=09" rel="noopener noreferrer">Exum told FOX Sports Cleveland</a> during his post-game availability. “It was very efficient. With the game hanging on the balance in the final frame, the 24-year-old Australian was scoring at will against Minny’s defenders, brushing off the challenge from Andrew Wiggins, Josh Okogie and rookie Jarrett Culver.</p><p>According to Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic, Robert Covington personally asked head coach Ryan Saunders to allow him to slow down the red-hot Exum. But Saunders kept his faith on the 20-year-old Texas Tech product and let him shadow Exum the rest of the way.</p><p>Culver honored his coach’s trust and did not let the team down, holding Exum scoreless the rest of the way.</p><figure class="op-interactive"><iframe class="no-margin"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-width="550" data-dnt="true"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Covington said he was lobbying to take the red-hot Exum.
