Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is letting the front office determine the future of the position heading into the 2020 NFL Draft.

Roethlisberger said he felt the Steelers already had some talented signal-callers on the roster, but also acknowledged the team might pursue a new quarterback if they feel a given prospect is more talented than the ones currently on the roster.

Although the Steelers are banking on Roethlisberger staying healthy and returning to form in 2020, it is not a stretch to suggest they could select a quarterback.

Roethlisberger just turned 38 in March, and Mason Rudolph did not do a whole lot to sell himself as the future of the franchise at the quarterback spot.

Sure, Rudolph went 5-3 in eight starts. But he also threw nine interceptions and averaged just 6.2 yards gained per pass attempt. Not to mention, Rudolph also ranked dead-last in total quarterback rating (QBR), per ESPN.

Regardless, any incoming QB would be a project for the Steelers, as Roethlisberger will return to his usual starting role in 2020.

“Big Ben” had a banner year in 2018, leading the NFL in completions (452) and passing yards (5,129) while also throwing 34 touchdown passes. But he struggled in Week 1 last season and also got off to a poor start in Week 2 against the Seattle Seahawks before suffering a career-ending injury.

Roethlisberger had actually been mostly healthy in recent seasons, and it is worth wondering whether he (like Tom Brady and Drew Brees) envisions playing into his 40s.

In any case, Roethlisberger will keep his focus on the field and leave future quarterback decisions to management.
