There are times in the National Football League when the divide of 32 fan bases becomes nonexistent and all becomes one. Ryan Shazier's scary injury a season ago was one such example.
Since the unfortunate tackle that left the young linebacking stud motionless on the ground, he's improved to the point of shocking results and continues to impress every step of the way. Now, the discussion about how far the speedy backer can go remains beyond optimistic.
According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert places “no ceiling” on Shazier's return from spinal surgery.
“There is no ceiling in Ryan's recovery. He aggressively approaches it every day,” Colbert said. “We support him in every way possible in that endeavor. Where that leads, only he will know and he will determine further down the road. His approach, his mental approach. I can't tell you how impressive an inspiration he is to us.”
The heartwarming story of the offseason has been keeping tabs on Shazier's recover. Whether he's lifting weights or moving around considerably, the progress made thus far has everybody providing a standing ovation from the living room, office or anywhere else a computer or smartphone is available.
Shazier, 25, is known as, arguably, the fastest linebacker in the world. The Ohio State product—drafted 15th overall in 2014—has improved each of the four seasons in Pittsburgh.
After a rookie season that saw him start in just five games and play in nine, he's received Pro Bowl nods in each of the last two seasons. A year ago, he finished with three interceptions, 11 passes defensed, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery and 68 tackles in just 12 games prior to the scary incident that currently has him on the road to recovery.
