Many NFL teams have different ways of ranking players when it comes to the NFL Draft, including doing mock drafts, holding their own specific rankings, and many other ways. According to Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert, they’ve have their own way of doing things for some time, and it seems to have worked.

Speaking to Mark Kaboly of The Athletic PGH, Colbert said that the Steelers haven’t used mock drafts in their draft preparation for almost a full decade. According to Kaboly, Colbert coined them as “worthless.”

Instead, he said, the team ranks players based on who they would take 1-20 in order to determine what exactly they would do when their pick arrives.

While this method isn’t exactly shocking, it is a bit surprising to hear that the team hasn’t used mock drafts in nearly 10 years. It isn’t the best thing to go by, but many teams do gauge how other teams feel about certain prospects, so not utilizing a mock draft could hurt when it comes time to figure out who you might take.

Despite the unorthodox method, the Steelers are obviously very confident in their draft strategy, and they should be.

The Steelers have had a pretty good run of draft picks lately, with players like T.J. Watt, James Connor, and JuJu Smith-Schuster all contributing very quickly after being selected.

The Steelers have lost a couple of solid pieces during the offseason, including a superstar running back and wide receiver, and so they’ll definitely be looking to boost their depth when it comes to the 2019 NFL Draft.
