Gregg Popovich couldn't help but commend the Spanish men's national basketball team for their excellent play in yesterday's scrimmage with Team USA.

Although the Americans triumphed over the Spaniards 90-81, Pop, who will be coaching Team USA in the FIBA World Cup, had high praises for their opponents. He said that he liked Spain's teamwork, which showed how experienced they are in international competition, per Ben Golliver of The Washington Post.

“I thought the Spanish team was just astounding with all the offense they ran, the way they execute, the way they read each other. You could really see the experience. We hope to get close to something like that.”

Still, Team USA was able to hold its ground against Spain. Their defense was good, their bench was productive, and they dominated the boards. The Americans showed a glimpse of what they can really do, which should ease a lot of fans' worries, especially since they lost to a bunch of G-League players a couple of days ago.

“It was like a baptism for us,” Popovich continued. “I was most pleased with us defensively. I thought we did a good job for a new group communicating with each other, and we had a good effort by everybody on the boards tonight.”

The roster that Team USA assembled for this year's FIBA World Cup has already been dubbed as arguably the weakest in history of the national program. So every member of the squad is playing with a chip on their shoulders. They want to prove that they are no pushovers and that they can compete at an elite level, and that's what they showed against Spain

It was a good win for USA Basketball. All they need to do now is be more consistent. They will play the Australian national team in two exhibition games next week before World Cup play begins on August 31 in China.
