Chinese tennis player Peng Shuai was in the headlines earlier this year when she mysteriously disappeared after she criticized a high-ranking member of the Chinese government of sexual assault. Shuai later reappeared and reassured the world that she was “safe and well.” With the 2022 Winter Olympics in full swing, Peng Shuai made a rare public appearance at the Games and spoke in what appeared to be a controlled interview, as reported by the Associated Press.

The interview with L’Equipe was her first sit-down discussion with non-Chinese-language media since the accusation. She walked back the original post.

“Sexual assault? I never said that anyone made me submit to a sexual assault,” the newspaper quoted her as saying.

“This post resulted in an enormous misunderstanding from the outside world,” she also said. “My wish is that the meaning of this post no longer be skewed.”

Asked by L’Equipe why the post disappeared from Peng’s account, she said: “I erased it.”

“Why? Because I wanted to,” she added.

Peng Shuai met with officials at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing but also gave an interview for an independent French sport news site called L'Equipe. Shuai shockingly walked back her original allegations of sexual assault, denying she ever did so.

She then said that the post resulted in a big misunderstanding, which she hopes is “no longer skewed.” These are shocking statements from Peng Shuai in this interview, especially given how things unfolded previously.

While the eyes of the world are focused on the 2022 Winter Olympics, perhaps more focus should be placed on these concerning comments from Chinese tennis player Peng Shuai in her recent interview.
