Continuing our recap coverage of the Summer Game Fest 2022, Microsoft had plenty of new reveals this month, along with their very own conference alongside Bethesda Game Works. As Microsoft stays committed to its initiative of offering premium games across many platforms and services for Windows 10/11, Xbox Series X|S, and Cloud Gaming, we picked out some of the most noteworthy reveals and announcements so far.
Wo Long: Fallen Destiny
From Team Ninja and the development team behind the Nioh series, Wo Long, Fallen Dynasty is confirmed to be a new take on the Soulsborne genre of hack and slash titles. Instead of focusing on Japanese folklore, Wo Long focuses on the Three Kingdoms era of feudal China. Playing as a nameless soldier, players will fight, die, and try to survive in a world filled with demons and enemies based on Chinese folklore. Players will also be able to make use of various weapons and unique swordplay based on Chinese martial arts.
Team Ninja has been well known for their work on past Dead or Alive games, along with their brilliant work on the Ninja Gaiden series. With their experiences developing Nioh 1 and 2, there is no doubt that developers will be able to create a Soulsborne title that's fast-paced, brutally difficult, and intriguing for anyone that wants to dig deeper into the game world.
Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty will release sometime in 2023 for Xbox Series X|S, along with Xbox One and Windows 10 PCs.
Starfield
As the biggest announcement for the Summer Game Fest with over twenty-five years in the making, Starfield has finally revealed its first gameplay footage ever. As many fans have quickly dubbed the title “No Man's Skyrim”, Starfield is an action-roleplaying game with a sci-fi theme, where players are tasked with exploring the further reaches of the galaxy. Create and pilot various spaceships, communicate with alien life forms, complete all sorts of missions and quests and discover the mysteries of the universe, all with Bethesda's signature gameplay.
While the gameplay trailer has proven to be a bit on the rough side, as many classic Creation Engine glitches have already been spotted, many Bethesda fans are remaining hopeful that this new IP will become just as legendary as Bethesda's Elder Scrolls and Fallout series. The game has a lot to live up to, and the team at Bethesda has been doing their best to make sure that the game launches in a fully functional state.
Starfield will be launching as an Xbox Series X|S console exclusive sometime in 2023.
Forza Motorsport (2023)
Xbox's premier sports racing series, Forza Motorsport, is returning once again with a brand new iteration. As the 8th entry in the long-running series, Forza Motorsport 2023 is getting rebooted and rebuilt from the ground up for the Xbox Series X|S, with 4K/60 Fps visuals, and improved racing physics (including improved vehicle damage), more realistic weather effects and more. The developers at Turn 10 are also planning to include many popular race tracks around the world, from the Spa Francorchamps, Laguna Seca, and the new Kyalami race track from South Africa. Popular race tracks such as Maple Valley will also receive updates to match the new visual upgrades.
The racing experience plans to be as immersive as can be, as Turn 10 has been taking incredible steps to make every car handle close to its real-world counterparts. So far, a handful of cars have been revealed, including the 2021 Audi RS e-Tron GT, 1969 Dodge Charge R/T, the 2019 Nissan 370Z Nismo, and several others. Hopefully, the customization will be just as deep as the driving gameplay to create the ultimate vehicle simulator.
Forza Motorsport 2023 will release sometime during the Spring of 2023 for the Xbox Series X|S and Windows 10/11 PCs.
Minecraft Legends
In a new twist on the ever-popular sandbox adventure series, Minecraft Legends has been revealed as a new action strategy game where players will engage in the same fun and engaging sandbox exploration that fans have come to expect from Minecraft, but now with a new element of building and unit management. Players will have to craft buildings, rally troops, and engage in a ton of combat from hundreds of enemies at a time. As players dive deeper into the game, they'll uncover the mysteries of the world as they work to unite the overworld with the underworld.
The Minecraft series has done well branching off the main series with new and varied gameplay experiences, such as Minecraft Dungeons, so many Minecraft fans can expect Minecraft Legends to deliver a solid gameplay experience from the start to finish.
Minecraft Legends is expected to launch first on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Xbox Game Pass, and Windows 10/11 PCs, then release on all other major platforms shortly after.
Routine
Previously announced over a decade ago as a Steam Greenlight title, Routine is an intense sci-fi horror game set within a 1980s-era lunar base. The game's premise surrounds exploring the lunar base while avoiding deadly robots that want to rip the player to shreds. If players can avoid the dangers that lurk within the base, they'll uncover the dark mystery that caused the lunar base to get abandoned in the first place.
While details on the game are currently limited, the biggest draw for the game at the moment is the announcement that Mick Gorden will be composing for the game. Mick is best known for his work on the music for Killer Instinct 2013 (Season 1), DOOM 2016 / DOOM Eternal, and the Wolfenstein series (2014-2017). With a creative musician like Mick on board, players can expect a soundtrack that will knock everyone off their feet.
While there is currently no release date, Routine will launch as a console exclusive on Xbox Series X|S.
