It has been a disaster of a season for the Minnesota Twins. Expected to compete for a pennant after winning back-to-back division crowns, things went south fast for Minnesota.

Now, with the Twins sitting at 39-50 and holding the 4th worst record in the American League, they will be sellers at the MLB Trade Deadline. One name to keep an eye on, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, is Byron Buxton.

The team’s latest offer to Buxton is in excess of the $70 million the Yankees awarded center fielder Aaron Hicks over a seven-year extension in Feb. 2019, sources said. Buxton, 27, likely will be dealt if he rejects the proposal, if not by the July 30 trade deadline — he currently is on the injured list with a fractured left hand — then this offseason.

For how good Buxton is, a $70 million extension may not sound like a whole lot. Keep in mind that Buxton is on the IL right now with a broken hand and was on the IL earlier in the year as well. This has become a consistent for the flashy centerfielder.

If Buxton weren't to have had all the injuries pile up over the last few years, he blows that $70 million mark out of the water. But, the best ability at times is availability and Buxton has yet to show the Twins he can stay healthy for even a large chunk of a season.

Only once in the last four seasons has the Twins' speedster played more than 39 games (last year shortened season) and that came in 2018 when he played 87 games. He's only exceeded 92 games played once in his seven year career and that came in 2017 (140 games).

Now, a big decision awaits. It's likely the Twins won't rush things and would trade him this summer compared to this trade deadline. If the sides can come to an agreement, great, Minnesota can keep building. If they can't, they could be looking at a multi-year rebuild with their main piece being sent out in a trade.
