Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins already expressed his desires to play out the rest of his career with the Purple and Gold. Despite finishing the 2020 season with a disappointing 7-9 record, the Michigan State alum continues to believe that his team can turn it around when they take the field come 2021.

“I want to be with the Vikings for as long as they’ll have me and as long as I can play football,” Cousins said via Pro Football Talk. “As far as how long I play, it’s so year to year. We’ve seen so much change happen in this league when you just look back a year ago to now. I’m sure a year from now will be no different.”

Prior to the 2020 season, Cousins inked a two-year, $66 million extension to remain with the Vikings. With a short deal in hand, the veteran playmaker wanted to ensure that he will get to land another contract in 2023 by further increasing his level of play in the next two seasons.

“Honestly, I just signed the extension last offseason and it really doesn’t kick in ’til this coming year,” he said. “It’s a two-year deal. Those two years begin with 2021. . . . I think it’s more about going out there next season and the year after that and playing at a high enough level that would justify being able to do another deal beyond that. That’s really where my focus is. As I said earlier, would like to be a Viking for the remainder of my career. I’ve got to play well enough to make that happen.”

Cousins currently has leverage in future contract talks as he is reportedly willing to play the next two seasons on a $56 million price tag and eventually test the waters by 2023 when he becomes an unrestricted free agent. The Vikings can opt to place a younger quarterback with a cheaper contract at the helm but head coach Mike Zimmer remains in favor of Cousins which makes a trade highly unlikely to happen in the near future.

Despite the unsteady contract situation, the only thing certain for now is that Kirk Cousins truly desires to be a Viking for the remainder of his career.
