The Golden State Warriors won't be in title contention if the 2019-20 NBA season does eventually resume in some fashion, but head coach Steve Kerr would still like to see the league crown a champion.
During an appearance on ESPN's “The Jump”, Kerr told Rachel Nichols that he “would really love to see some conclusion to this season, if people’s health isn’t compromised obviously that’s the main thing.”
Kerr reiterated that he wants to see a resumption of basketball as long as the league can “find a way to do it where nobody’s at risk.”
“We can have some competition that would allow the teams that are clearly the best teams in the league to compete against each other, I know it’s not the same thing, but if that’s the best we could do at minimum, it would be great to be able to do that.”
The Warriors' streak of five consecutive NBA Finals appearances would technically remain alive if the 2020 playoffs have to be cancelled. The Dubs have a solid chance at returning to championship contention next season with a fully healthy roster and presumably a top pick in the 2020 draft. Kerr insisted that he wouldn't mind delaying the start of the 2020-21 season, if need be.
“If it were to push next season’s start time back a little bit, no problem, we can do that. It’s not my department, but the league has talked about doing that anyway. With what is going on in the country, I think we have to be flexible,” Kerr said.
