Over this past weekend, thousands in Houston were heavily affected by Hurricane Harvey tearing through the area.

Many professional athletes have put forth financial efforts toward helping out the relief process. According to the Washington Post, the Washington Wizards' backcourt duo of John Wall and Bradley Beal have organized a team fundraising effort for those dealing with Hurricane Harvey.

As the Hurricane Harvey devastated Houston over the weekend, Washington Wizards players John Wall and Bradley Beal decided to help. The pair reached out to teammates through a group text message, leading the effort to raise money for people affected by the hurricane and historical flooding in Southeast Texas.

By Monday, the players’ donations had reached $250,000 with more dollars expected. According to a team source, Markieff Morris and Otto Porter Jr. were two of the first players to respond to the group message and give money, and the players’ impromptu fundraising has spread throughout the Wizards’ organization.

Majority team owner Ted Leonsis, President Ernie Grunfeld and Coach Scott Brooks also have personally donated money to the American Red Cross, and the organization over the Wizards, Capitals and Mystics’ charities, MSE Foundation has contributed to the amount.

This was quite an admirable effort by the Wizards to help out the rebuilding process for those impacted in Houston and other nearby areas. Other professional athletes such as Houston Texans star defensive end J.J. Watt has helped raised more than $1.5 million, Los Angeles Angels star outfielder Mike Trout has donated $27,000, and Houston Rockets All-Star point guard Chris Paul has donated $50,000 to Watt's efforts.

Rockets owner Leslie Alexander has upped his donation contributions from $4 million to $10 million while Texans owner Robert McNair is giving $1 million, and Houston Astros owner Jim Crane is pledging to donate $4 million.

There should plenty much more on the way in terms of financial help with many more players and owners across each major professional sport putting in their own share of contributions to the rebuilding effort.
